1. Approved Clubs - What is a FreeWay Pre-Approved club?FreeWay Pre-Approved Clubs are those who already have a vetting system in place. Their existing club members must get to know new applicants and before they are accepted into those clubs, they have to be nominated or sponsored by one or more existing members.
We have completed careful security assessments of all our FreeWay Pre-Approved clubs, so their approval becomes our approval. If you are a current financial member of a FreeWay pre-approved club, we simply confirm your current membership with that club, and as a member you are automatically granted our 'FreeWay Verified' status (see Security).
-
2. Faults - The FreeWay screens look weird and some information is out of placeMany large corporate businesses, and Government agencies (like libraries) run brwosers that out of date and we know that many of these display our web screens in unpredictable ways. So in most cases if you are seeing weird or corrupted screens, this will be a problem with your browser.
The Freeway HomeStay website works best on Explorer, Safari, Firefox and Chrome browsers that are up to date. Just make sure that you are running the latest version of one of these browers. (Updates can be dowloaded and installed for free).
If this doesn't fix the problem, please email us with the following informaiton:
- Name of Operating System (e.g. Windows Vista, Mac OSX...)
- Version number of your Operating System
- Type of Browser you are using (Explorer, Firefox, Chrome...)
- Version number of your Browser)
- Include a screen shot of the faulty screen -
3. FreeWay-News Updates - How can I start getting these again? -
4. FreeWay-News Updates - How do I stop getting these?Click on 'Edit my Profile' under MAINTAIN (on the left side of your home page).
Then untick the box "Subscribe to News". -
5. Guest Credits - What are these?A Guest Credit represents one night’s accommodation for one person. When you pay by Guest Credit, you are also expect to make a small cash contribution towards the cost of bedding, a shower and a morning coffee. For each night that you stay with another FreeWay Member, our system will deduct one Guest Credit from your account and credit this to your Host’s account.
(Click here to view the FreeWay HomeStay Overnight Hosting Charges).
-
6. Guest Credits - What if I run out?A Guest Credit represents one night’s accommodation for one Guest. (Tag-Alongs are also considered to be Guests).
Each Road Surfer (Full Member) is given three (3) Guest Credits to get them started when they first join up.If you run out of Guest Credits you will be expected to make a modest Cash Only Payment.
(Click here to view the Overnight Hosting Charges).
Of course, as a Road Surfer you can also act as a Host, and thereby earn additional Guest Credits from other FreeWay members. -
7. Guests - Are there any rules or guidlines?Yes. We refer to these as Guest protocols. Find out more about what is required of a Guest here.
-
8. Guests - Booking for other MembersWhen you become a Road Surfer, you can grant permission to other members to book accommodation on your behalf, and they can do the same for you. Together we call them 'Booking Buddies'. Under your personal profile page you'll see your buddies listed as 'Buddies - I can book for'.
When you make your booking, you’ll see the names of your 'Buddies'' and also the Tag-Alongs that you have registered under your own membership. You can include any one or more of these people in your booking. However, you cannot place a booking for Tag-Alongs that belong to any other member.
When you book on behalf of a Booking Buddy, we will deduct Guest Credit(s) from THEIR account to cover the cost of THEIR stay. If they have run out of Credits, they will have to pay the Cash Only Payment for their Stay. While your Tag-Alongs would also typically pay the Cash Only Payment price you can elect to use some of your own Guest Credits for them if you wish. Each person who pays their Host a Guest Credit for each night, then only pays the Guest Credit Payment.
Please be aware that you cannot use the Guest Credits that belong to your Booking Buddies to cover either you or your Tag-Alongs. -
9. Guests - How much do I pay for an overnight stay?As a Road Surfer (a full Member) you are allocated three (3) Guest Credits when you first join up. While Tag-alongs are not allocated any initial Guest Credits they are still considered to be Guests for the purpose of overnight 'Stays', and all Guests are charged equally. Each Guest is expected to pay either the Guest Credit Payment, or a Cash Only Payment, for each night they are Hosted.
The Guest Credit Payment: One (1) Guest Credit and a small cash payment are required for each night’s stay, just to cover the cost of bedding, a shower and a morning coffee. The total number of Guest Credits required for each night's stay, will be deducted from your account and transferred to your Host's account. Cash payments are made on the night.
The Cash Only Payment: When/if you have run out of Guest Credits, each remaining Guest will be expected to pay the Cash Only Payment (also paid on the night). As a Road Surfer, you can of course, earn additional Guest Credits by Hosting other riders from whom you will earn Guest Credits.
(Click here to view the current FreeWay HomeStay Overnight Host Charges). -
10. Guests - What if I cancel my night's accommodation? When you lodge a request for accommodation with a FreeWay Host, the Guest Credits required to cover that Stay are immediately deducted from your acount(s) and are held in abeyance. On the first night of your stay with that particular Host, those Guest Credits are transferred to your Host.
If you cancel your overnight stay prior to date of the booking, all Guest Credits will be returned to the Guest(s)' accounts.
You cannot cancel your accommodation booking after the date has past.
The 'Stay' will have been deemed to have occurred and the Host will receive all Credits that are due.
You will NOT be entitled to recover those Credits. -
11. Guests – How do I search for a place to stay?- On your Accommodation Profile, click on 'Somewhere to sleep', under Stay on the left hand menu
- This will bring up the 'Book Accommodation' page
- Select the people you wish to book for, enter a town/city, and date range, then click 'Search Accommodation'
- This will display a list of available Hosts either in that town/city or those nearest to it
- Review each Hosts' Profile (optional) then select the Host you'd like to stay with
- You can then elect whether to pay by Guest Credit or by Cash Only payment (or a mixure of both)
- Our system will then lodge your request on their Home Page and we will also send an emai alerting them of your request
- You may also wish to call them directly to speed up their response but remember, they may want to review your profile and feedback first. -
12. Hosts - Are their any rules or guidlines?Yes, but we refer to these as Host protocols. Find out more about being a good Host here.
-
13. Hosts - What security does FreeWay provide for Hosts?Security is a vital part of the value we provide to our Members so we have developed a ‘vetting’ process to ensure that motorcyclists wanting to join FreeWay HomeStay are the sort of people that you would feel comfortable inviting into your home. (Find out more about FreeWay 'Security').
A small handfull of clubs in NZ have been pre-approved by us and if you belong to one of these clubs and they verify that you are a current member with them, your membership will automatically receive a 'FreeWay Verified' security status.
If you do not belong to a FreeWay pre-approved club, you can either join as an unverified member, or you can meet with a FreeWay Marshal to have your details confirmed, and they will activate your 'FreeWay Verified' status.??
Another vital part of our security is the feedback system. Whenever one of our members uses the accommodation system, (either as a Guest or a Host) they are required to complete feedback on each other. We’ve kept the process very simple, with either a rating of Acceptable, Neutral, or Unacceptable. We also provide a free format message field where additional comments can be made. This feedback system will ensure that both Guests and Hosts conduct themselves appropriately and if they don’t, it’s obvious that they will ‘shut the door’ on themselves pretty quickly.
And finally, we retain the crucial registration details of every applicant. While these are safe and secure from a Privacy Act point of view, the police have the right to access this information from us under warrant should they need to track anyone down. -
14. Hosts – How do I become (or stop being) an active FreeWay HostYour Hosting status will default to 'On' when you sign up the first time. To turn this off and on as required:
- From your Home Page click on 'Being a Host', under 'Stay' on the left hand menu. This will bring up your Accommodation profile.
- Here you can turn your Hosting Availability On and Off as required.
- Check the first option which says, 'No Guests till further notice'.
- If the On button is selected, you will NOT be found by Guests requesting accommodation
- If the Off button is selected, you WILL be found by Guests requesting accommodation -
15. Hosts – How do I block out the nights that I am not available to Host?- Click on 'Being a Host', under 'Stay' on the left hand menu on your Home Page. This will open your Accommodation Profile.
- Scroll down to 'Nights you are willing to Host someone', and select or un-select the nights of the week that you are permanently unavailable for.
- If you are only blocking out nights as a one-off, then use the option below called 'Date not available' to block out one or more periods. -
16. Hosts – I am happy to have Guests, but I already have enough Guest Credits – What can I do?- From your Home Page click on 'Being a Host', under 'Stay' on the left hand menu. This will bring up your Accommodation profile
- Scroll down to 'I accept Guest Credits' and untick this option
- You will still be found by Guest who are happy to use the Cash Payment option for their accommodation
- You will not be found by Guests who only want to pay using their Guest Credits only -
17. Joining Up - How do I upload my photo? You will need to find a 'Head and Shoulders' photo of yourself and for your Tag-Alongs (no hoods, helmets, hats, or sunglasses).
If you have a camera, it's probably easiest just to take a new shot of yourself, put it on your computer and copy it into an MS Word document.
Alternatively, find a good family photo (with you in it of course) and copy that into a Word document.
Once your photo is in a Word document, use the cropping tool on the 'Pictures' toolbar to crop (or trim) the photo until your smiling face is all that's left!
Save each cropped photo to your 'desktop' so they're easy to find.
Make sure that these are saved in a jpg, png, or gif format.
If you have trouble with this part of the process, find a teenager to help (they just love to show off their computer skills!),
or click here to see a 'how-to' video'.
Now you're ready for the upload.
This part is pretty easy. Just click on the orange 'Upload Image' button.
This will open up a window that will let you find and select the you pictures you recently saved on your desk top.
It's as easy as that! -
18. Marshals - Can I become a FreeWay Marshal?Yes, but positions may already be filled in your area at the moment.
We’d still like to hear from you though, so please register your interest by emailing us at marshals@freewayhomestay.co.nz
Meanwhile there is some information on the role, the sort of people we’re looking for, and the benefits of becoming a FreeWay Marshal. -
19. Marshals - Do Marshals get paid for their service? Our Marshals are important to us so we do our best to look after them. The task of verifying an applicant's details shouldn't take more than a few minutes (unless you like to meet people and have a good old chin-wag) and we don't expect you to become inundated with requests. Regardless of this we still want to say thank you in some way.
That's why all of our Marshals all get free annual membership for themselves and their families (their Tag-Alongs), every year.
And should we fullfill our plans to go International, we'll upgrade the membership of all Marshals to 'Global Road Surfer' status, also at no charge.
Find out more about becoming a FreeWay Marshal. -
20. Marshals - What is a FreeWay Marshal?A FreeWay Marshal is a registeterd FreeWay Member who has been hand picked and appointed by us for the role of vetting other applicants. Ultimately we expect to have a total of about 45 Marshals around New Zealand. (Find out more about FreeWay Marshals).
Applicants who are not a current member of a FreeWay Pre-Approved Club may elect to visit a Marshal to become 'FreeWay Verified'. If so they will be asked to bring their driver’s licence and a copy of the information that they have uploaded onto our system. They will also be required to show proof of their current address, such as a bank statement or a power bill. This is a vital part of the security we offer to existing members, who wish to become 'FreeWay Verfied.
An applicant will contact the Marshal directly, to arrange a mutual time and place to meet. Marshals are NOT expected to travel to meet with applicants, and all applicants are advised of this. Find out more about the benefits of becoming a FreeWay Marshal. -

24. Membership - How do I cancel my membership? There are three ways you can 'drop out' of the system.
1. You can simply turn off your hosting availability (you won't get any requests or emails), then you can just ignore our website.
Your membership will evenutally expire and you will no longer be 'found' by other members.
2. You can email us and ask us to manually expire your membership for you at our end. (We do not provide refunds for early expiries).?
If you wish to rejoin at any time within five (5) years of expiry, you'll just pay the regular annual membership fee.
If you wish to rejoin more than five (5) years after your membership has expired, you will need to reregister.
3. You can ask us to manually terminate your membership at our end. While this will permanently remove your profile from our system,
we will retain (ownership of) any road-rides you may have published as per our Terms and Conditions.
If your membership is terminated, and you subsequently wish to rejoin, you will need to reregister.
NOTE: If your membership is Terminated then so is your profile and your USERNAME.
As per our Terms and Conditions, FreeWay HomeStay does not provide refunds for early expiries or for Terminations of membership.
FreeWay HomeStay reserves the right to Terminate any membership, at any time, and for any reason, and may decline future registrations. -
25. Membership - How do I renew my membership?Approximately 4 months before your current membership expires, we will display a renewal option on your Home Page. This option will remain on your Home Page for up to five years AFTER your membership expires so you can renew at any time within that period.
Just log in to your Home Page and click on the renewal option. Don’t worry about renewing too early. If you renew before your existing membership expires, we'll just add an additional 365 days to your existing expiry date, so you won’t loose any unexpired days. If you renew after your membership expires, you will get a whole year (365 days) from the date that you have renewed, so you won't pay for any expired days either.
Click here to find out how you can earn free membership.
Note: Even after your membership expires you will still be able to log in to your profile, we simply disable your access to primary functions.
Once your membership has been renewed, full access to the system will be restored. The only time you won't be able to log in to see your profile is after the five year period is up. Should this happen you will need to re-register as a new member.
(For further details about our rights to terminate memberships, click here and review our Terms and Conditions). -
26. Membership - How much do I pay if I let it lapse? As long as you renew your membership within 5 years of your previous expiry date, we will waive the First Year Registration fee.
If you let your membership lapse for longer than 5 years, you will be required to pay the registration fee again. -
27. Membership - How much does it cost?To view our current Membership and Accommodation Hosting costs, click here.
-
28. Membership - If I renew too early, do I loose any unused days? No. If you renew before your existing membership expires, we simply add the new term (365 days) to your existing expiry date so you won’t loose any unexpired days.
-
29. Membership - If my Membership expires, do I loose any information? No. We will retain your membership information for up to five years, and we allow you to renew your membership at anytime within that period.
When the five year peiod is up you will lose your username and personal informatiopn. You will need to re-register as a new member.
(Click here to review our Terms and Conditions). -
30. Membership - What types of Membership are there?Currently we have two types of membership:
- Road Surfers (Full Members)
- Tag-Alongs (Associate Members)
Road Surfer
We refer to our Full Members as 'Road Surfers'. As a Road Surfer you pay a small annual fee which grants you full acces to the FreeWay HomeStay system. This includes unfettered access to our Road Trips database (DISCOVER), to our search and private messaging services (CONNECT), and to our Host-Ride-Stay accommodation booking system (STAY).When you first register with FreeWay HomeStay there is also a small 'Initial Registration Fee' but this is charged (just once) when you first register (or if you are ever required to re-register).
Tag-Along
We refer to our Associate Members as Tag-Alongs. It's our way of offering a family discount. Tag-Alongs are typically spouses/partners, other family members, or close friends that may travel only occasionally with you. By adding Tag-Alongs to your own membership, they too can benefit from our low cost Host-Ride-Stay Accommodation service. They need to be added to our system so that your prospective Hosts know who you are bringing along with you when you ask to stay. This is an important part of our security, as FreeWay Hosts cannot be expected to let you show up with just anyone.
While you can include up to six Tag-Alongs in your membership we charge a small annual membership fee for just the first two of these. You would typically add Tag-Alongs when you first join up, but you can add (or remove) Tag-Alongs at any time during the year. If you add a Tag-Along later in the year we will automatically adjust their expiry date to match your existing expiry date, and you will only be charged a 'part-year' for their membership. The next time you renew your membership you will be charged a full year's membership for yourself, and for any Tag-Along's you wish to retain. You can remove Tag-Alongs at anytime, but please be aware that we do NOT offer refunds for any cancelled memberships.
Please note that Tag-Alongs (Associate Members) DO NOT have independent access to our Website.
(To review our current membership fees, click here).
Other Memberships Types?
If the new FreeWay HomeStay Service is well supported here in New Zealand, we will consider extending this service to Australian road riders. Should this occur, we will offer membership access to both countries via an add-on membership option where members can be upgraded to 'Global Road Surfer'. This will enable New Zealand members to search and review Australian Road Trips, and vice-versa. In addition to this, members of both counties will be able to book accommodation with each other on a 'Cash Only Payment' basis. (Guest Credits will not be transferable between members of different countries). -
31. Membership - Who can apply for full membership?Any New Zealander over 18, who holds a current motorcycle licence can apply for full membership with FreeWay HomeStay. Applications are made on our website where you are asked to load your full name and address along with your drivers licence number, and a current 'head and shoulders' photo (like a passport photo).
A small handfull of clubs in NZ have been pre-approved by us and if you belong to one of these clubs and they verify that you are a current member with them, your membership will automatically receive a 'FreeWay Verified' security status.
If you do not belong to a FreeWay pre-approved club, you can either join as an unverified member, or you can meet with a FreeWay Marshal to have your details confirmed, and they will activate your 'FreeWay Verified' status.
We also ask that you upload a photo of each of your Tag-Alongs so that they can be identified by our 'Hosting' members when you come to stay. Tag-Alongs do not need to have their own motorcycle licence and can also be minors (i.e. under the age of 18).
Please Note: You are held personally responsible for the behaviour of your Tag-Alongs as per our Terms and Conditions. -
32. Road Surfer - What is a Road Surfer? We refer to our Full Members as 'Road Surfers'. As a Road Surfer you pay a small annual fee which grants you full acces to the FreeWay HomeStay system. This includes unfettered access to our Road Trips database (DISCOVER), to our search and private messaging services (CONNECT), and to our Host-Ride-Stay accommodation booking system (STAY).
When you first register with FreeWay HomeStay there is also a small 'Initial Registration Fee' but this is charged (just once) when you first register (or if you are ever required to re-register).

33. Road Trips - How do I create and submit a Road Trip?Firstly, it might help to read our Hints on creating a good Road Trip.
When you're ready, just send us an email with your story, and photo's and any internet links you want us to include, and we will upload it for you.
Don't forget to provide us with the start and finish locations so that we can create the link in Google Maps!Email the FreeWay team at: roadtrips@freewayhomestay.co.nz
-
34. Road Trips - There are too many trips showing on the map of NZ.The list of Trips we display for you is derived:
a). From the Discovery Types you have selected (ticked) and
b). Those which fall within the boundaries of the Google Map screen you are viewing.
(We use the Google location ID we hold for each trip, to locate and display these trips on your map).If there are too many trips, showing on your map, un-tick any trip types that you don't need. Another option is to zoom in closer to the area you are interested in. When you zoom in, Trips that are outside the new Map Boundaries will drop off the list of trips found and displayed.
Yet another option is to complete an 'Advanced Search'. Here you can further refine the list of trips displayed by Location, Author, Estimated Time, Distance, Road Surface, Road Type, and Rider Expertise. To undo your selections, click on 'Basic Search' to go back to the main selection screen.
-
35. Road Trips - What is a Day Trip?Obviously Day Trips only take one day to complete! However, riders should be aware that ride times and distances can vary greatly. This may be due to the actual distance involved (some may take up to 7-8 hours while others may be just be shorter). But it can also depend on the riders level of experience and endurance. Some of those old codgers will surprise you at the pace they can maintain over a long distance without tiring!
-
36. Road Trips - What is a Feature Road?A Feature Road is a road that is really worthy of note, even though it may be a main route from A to B. Feature Roads may also be an alternative to a Main Route.
Thay differ from Quirky Back Roads in so much that the Quirky Back Roads generally take you OFF the main road and will usually extend your journey in both time and distance in favour of a more interesting ride. -
37. Road Trips - What is a Hot Spot?A Hot Spot is a place to visit or an activity that is free.
By comparison, a Local Attraction costs money to engage in. -
38. Road Trips - What is a Local Attraction?A Local Attraction is a place to visit or an activity that costs money to engage in .
By comparison, a Hot Spot is free. -
39. Road Trips - What is a Quirky Back Road?A Quirky Back Road is one that will usually take OFF the main highways. These roads will often extend your trip in both time and distance, in favour of a more interesting ride. These are best explored when you don't have a deadline or a tight riding schedule.
-
40. Road Trips - What is a Short Walk?Short Walks are those which we have identified as being most appealing to road riders. In identifying these, we have kept to four simple criteria.
1. The walks can be completed in simple shoes or riding boots.
2. They are short, usually at 30 mins or less (return).
3. There is something worthy of seeing at the other end
4. They are not steep, or muddy, or difficult, and are suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
As most of us are NOT bird watchers, botanists or trampers, we have overlloked some simple walks that have these features. We simply want to help our fellow road riders to enjoy their journey, by providing a richer experience. Short walks are also a good way to break your journey and refresh yourself. -
41. Road Trips - What is an Essential Road Trip?Essential Road Trips require AT LEAST one overnight stay. They may involve a weekend away staying somwhere on Friday and Saturday nights and returning home again on Sunday night, or they might involve a major 10-20 day trip around our fatastic countryside. These trips are documented either for those who are visiting a totally new part of the countryside, or perhaps even brave enough to visit the 'Other Island'! They will also be useful to younger or new riders who perhaps don't really know what's out there or don't really know how much time they should allow for each day.
-
42. Tag Alongs - Can a Tag-Along become a full member later on?Yes they can, but they will need to hold a motorcycle license and register separately.
If your Tag-Along does join up independantly don't foget to remove them from your Tag-Alongs list. -
43. Tag-Alongs - What is a Tag-Along?We refer to our Associate Members as Tag-Alongs. It's our way of offering a family discount.

By adding Tag-Alongs to your own membership, they too can benefit from our low cost Host-Ride-Stay Accommodation service. This is an important part of our security, as FreeWay Hosts cannot be expected to let you show up with just anyone.
While you can include up to six Tag-Alongs in your membership we charge a small annual membership fee for just the first two of these.
