Our innovative Road Trip Management System allows road riders from all over New Zealand to submit and store their favorite road trip experiences in our central database, and in doing so to share these with FreeWay members all around New Zealand.
As the author of these experiences your name and date of publication will be there for all to see. While no one will be able to delete your story, we will allow others (perhaps with greater literary skills) to edit and improve your story, but we will only publish their update with your permission. You name will always be retained as the author of record.
| So what types of road experiences can be created here? Well, we’ve labeled these as: |
-> Essential Road Trips |
Essential Road Trips
…are any trip that requires one or more nights away from home. They may be a simple weekend road trip starting on a Friday night after work and returning home on Sunday afternoon, or they may be full-on 10-20 day explorations of our fabulous country.
As the author of your trip, you’ll need to give us a Heading, a Description of the journey (your story) and of course lot's of great photo's. Don't forgt to tell us about the Type of Road and Road Condition, and a Suggested Rider Expertise Level. Our Road Trip Management System incorporates the power of Google Maps so we can build your trip visually too. We then use the map location data to locate and display your trip in our database.
We know that not everyone is confident with computers, so just send us your photo's and story and we'll create your trip for you.
Dazzling Day Trips
…are literally that. A trip that can be completed in just one day. You are the local expert when it comes to great paces to ride around your region. You
probably know these rides like the back of your hand. You’ve done them like a 1,000 times and they’re no big deal to you, but they are likely to a big deal to other road riders from other parts of the country.
Imagine it. Other FreeWay members from all around New Zealand, are hand-picking the best rides, and documenting them for you, for the next time you visit their part of the country. There are roads out there that we may all have previously ridden right past, and we have been completely unaware of what we have just missed out on. That’s why we call this ‘DISCOVER’. It’s our goal to help members to discover, (or perhaps ‘re-discover’) more of these great NZ roads.
Fabulous Feature Roads
...are those roads which are not neccesarily out of the way, but are pehaps alternative routes, or even main roads that are remarkable in some way. For instance some North Island tourists think that the West Coast of the South island is a long way to go see nothing and that the east coast highway is the fastest way to get to Queenstown. But the Haast Pass is a road that should be put on everyone's 'bucket' list. In fact the entire west coast is a true biker's road.
Quirky BackRoads
…can be found in abundance here in New Zealand. You just have to know where they are, and how to find them.
We all know some great back roads but up until now, none of us could find them all.
What was needed was a way to collect and share that knowledge for the benefit of everyone.
Well today, through FreeWay HomeStay, it’s now possible! Through our ‘Discover’ service, we’re helping Kiwi riders to build a 'community' database full of day trips, road trips, back roads and hot spots and to share these with fellow 'Road-Surfers'.
Amazing Hot Spots
…are also best identified by those with local knowledge. Despite how small our country is, it would be a brave road rider who can say that they have been
everywhere, and seen it all. Whether its witnessing the swirling merger of two oceans at Cape Reinga, or seeing Tane Mahuta up close and personal, or gasping at the mind-boggling panorama at Cathedral Cove, there will be places and sights and you haven’t visited or seen.
Have you taken the brief walk from the road up to Lake Rotopounamu? Or meandered along the ‘Forgotten Highway’, cruised through the alpine beauty of Arthur’s Pass in early spring, or climbed down to stand on the enormous rocks blocking the river at Haast’s Gate?
What about a walk through the Buried Village in Rotorua, or the Light House at Castle Rock? And there’s the short walk to the foot of the Fox Glacier or to the warm water leaking up through the sand at Hot Water Beach!
Local Attractions
…are those places to visit or specific activities that will cost money to engage in. And the ones we list are truly worth a visit.
You might go whale watching at Kaikauora or snorkelling at the Poor Knights. You might wish to walk up a dead volcanic island (Auckland's Rangitoto) or walk on a LIVE volcanic island when you visit White Island. Clapham's Clocks in Whangarei boasts the largest clock collection in the southern hemisphere, and Southwards Museum near Wellington has a huge collection of cars, planes and motorcycles. Take guided tours through amazing caves displaying old Moa bones, or skydive over Lake Taupo, NZs largest volcano.
And the list continues to grow as new members contribute their own knowledge about local attractions for out of town visitors.
DISCOVER – CONNECT – STAY
It’s our Mission to help New Zealanders lower the cost of ‘Road Surfing’ and to enrich the experience of the ‘Road Trip’.
Our strategy is to use the power of the Internet to bring our community closer together.
To enhance the power of sharing! To build a common centralised database for one and all.
That’s the strength of our community. We all love bikes. We all love riding.
So much so, that every motorcyclist we meet on the road is like a brother to us.
We invite them home and get to know them and perhaps to share a meal.
Sometimes we even put them up for the night and take them out on some of our favourite local rides.
